I’m sure all of you have heard about artist who said:

  • “I can’t draw better because I don’t have Adobe Photoshop, GIMP, Easy Paint Tool SAI, etc.”
  • "I wish I had a tablet."
  • "This drawing software sucks"
  • "I can't improve if I lack of…"
  • "I need *x element*"

I had thought about encouraging artists to be... artists!

I want to show you that making art doesn't depend on having a tablet or a wide used good drawing program. Also if you're a traditional artist you don't need the most expensive markers or a wide collection of different colors. Of course, we want to be great artists and when we improve our skills, tools become a need and part of a more professional work, but that doesn't mean that someone lacking of professional tools can't be an artist or even improve.

I’ll give you a few advices to improve as an artist, no matter what program do you use or if you have a tablet.

1. Don’t blame the tools

I want to make everyone remember that art is never a drawing program's fault or that tools suck if they are not as helpful as you expect.

You can have a program like MS Paint and be a great artist! But you also can be an artist who has Adobe Photoshop but be a mediocre artist.
Same for tools! You can have a mouse and still manage to do draw clean artworks even if it's hard, or have a tablet and don't know how to use it correctly because it needs time to learn.
it depends on the effort and patience we put in our art.

I’ll give you a few advises to improve as an artist, no matter what program you use and tools.

2. Don’t worry about Wacom, Bamboo, Genius or x tablets

I’ve been a digital artist for about 5 years now, just a couple of years ago I started to use a tablet. Most of my old art I did without a tablet, for example this drawing:

If a mouse hurts your hand or it’s uncomfortable, I understand it, but that’s no obstacle if you really want to go far. Mouse artists get often a lot of respect. It's not like my hand didn't hurt as well!

 3. “I have not as much talent”

It is true not everyone has the same skills, not everyone improves the same way or not everyone has the same patience, but I always say: If you love art, if that’s what you love doing and YOU can imagine yourself a future with it and don’t put yourself down. If you DO want to work hard to be better… then “talent” doesn’t matter. Talent is not something you’re born with, it’s something you get with the time, and time is different for everyone. I’ve met artists than have improved in years, while others just improve in months, don’t be mad about it, look at it as a life test and encourage others like you!  If you give up, who will do it? What example are you giving to others? All you need is will.

Thanks everyone for reading and I hope you consider all of this!

Let me leave a small feature below of artists who have gone far with only their will even if they have no tablets or Adobe Photoshop:
